Hell on Flight 840

Foreword: I quickly wrote the article below in 1986, about three weeks after the event: a mid-air explosion on a Boeing 727, as I was flying from Rome to Athens. It needs a re-write, however, here it is as published in Cosmopolitan Magazine. In light of what’s still happening in the Middle East, I thought there might be interest in what was happening twenty-five years ago. The movie was eventually entitled “Hostage” (not “Raw Terror” as is noted at the end of the article) and my part was, indeed, shot in the fuselage of a plane for six weeks after the plane incident itself. With Wings Hauser, Karen Black, and Kevin McCarthy, I played a mother who’s child is kidnapped by terrorists.

On April 2, 1986, at about 1325 hours an explosion occurred aboard TWA flight 840 while the flight was descending into Athens, Greece, from Rome Italy. At the time of the event, the airplane was at an altitude of 15,000 feet and about 8 minutes from the airport. The explosion caused by a bomb tore a 3 ft. X 3 ft. Hole in the right side of the fuselage, adjacent to seat 10F. There was a rapid decompression and the flight crew declared an emergency. The airplane made an uneventful landing. The investigation was completed by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority.
